May English Week

This month’s theme was World Book Day! Students learnt a lot about some carefully selected books and engaged in so many fun and exciting activities. KS1 learnt all about the works of the late, great Eric Carle. KS2 had the opportunity to delve more deeply into their class readers, and really get to grips with the details of Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, and L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz.

Early Primary students got to read along and act out parts of the story. Some star performers even changed their voices to sound more like the characters they were holding! There were many students eager to take part in Brown Bear, Brown Bear, From Head To Toe, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Afterwards, students created many beautiful pieces of artwork inspired by Eric Carle. Some of the best were displayed around the school and won Class Dojo points!

Upper Primary students had a flipped classroom micro-lesson on characterisation to help them better understand the difficult literary concepts in their readers. On the playground they engaged with moments from the stories, acting them out dramatically and discussing the text with peers and teachers. Afterwards students created some original characters they thought might work well in their storybooks. Some of the best characters were displayed around the school and won Class Dojo points.
