English Days
The English panel introduced some exciting new initiatives this year to develop the school’s language-rich environment. Students have been consistently delighted and surprised by the myriad of activities and opportunities to speak English, and participation has been fantastic. Here is what has happened so far, who know what we’ll do next?
25th-26th April: ENGLISH WEEK Marvel Missions!
This year’s English week followed hot on the heels of the Library’s excellent Marvel Heroes Month. Each year group received mission booklets and had to help the Avengers using their English Powers! Students took part in a wide range of activities designed to promote literacy, oracy and creativity.
At Station 1, students could create their very own Marvel Hero to go on adventures with. From the very original (“Colourful Girl”) to the very strange (“Old Grandpa Man”) students showed so much creativity and imagination we are sure they will go on to make superhero films!
Station 2 saw students trying to build a New Tower for the Avengers out of marshmallows and dried spaghetti. Students worked well together in teams and made mighty, magnificent towers. With some truly inspired designs, the Avengers can certainly relax in their new home.
Station 3 was crazy Kahoot quizzes. Students got to play their favourite quizzes from the past year and see how much they remembered.
Hawkeye Shootout at Station 4 proved one of the busiest activities. Students competed against each other to read cards and match them to the right category or rhyming sound. With students getting 10 – 20 points per card, they needed solid teamwork – some of the high scores were over 400 points!
Station 5 had Heads Up. Students had to help their friends guess what was on their hat, but couldn’t say the word or do any actions. After very funny guesses and some very good clues, students got lots of right answers.
Station 6 was rather special – KS1 students had Storytelling, and KS2 had Avengers Adverts.
For the big book reading, students had a wonderful story read to them, asked questions and then read along with the book. Students enjoyed reading some of their favourite books, and the helpers were fantastic, making the stories even more interesting.
At the Advert Studio, students had to pick a product to sell and make a very interesting advert for it. Students had some very interesting items that could do anything from make you smarter to helping you get 100 points in dictations! We look forward to seeing what they will create in the future.
Taking care of over 150 students at a time is no easy task; thankfully our P5 English Ambassadors were supported by some honourary P4 Ambassadors and the SUPER PARENT Volunteers. They ran each stall and made sure everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves. Thank you again SUPER PARENTS, without your help none of this would have been possible!

21st March: Easter Egg Extravaganza
Easter is one of the most important times in the year. At Easter we remember how Jesus died for our sins and then came back to life. When Jesus’ followers went to where he was buried, they found the tomb empty, and the big stone was rolled away.”
The eggs we decorate, and the chocolate eggs we eat are all empty inside, like the tomb. When we crack open the eggs, it is like the followers finding the tomb empty.
Students took part in an Easter Egg hunt looking all over the playground for them. At the Eggs they had challenges, like singing, hopping like a bunny, or writing some Easter Wishes. There was even a photo booth for them to take pictures in. Can you guess who is who?
24th January 2018: Success in every dogrection
To get students excited for Chinese New Year, teachers encouraged students to make decorative Fai Chun with English phrases. Student participation was incredibly enthusiastic, and their fantastic efforts are displayed around the school.
The English Ambassadors also ran a tuck shop. Two competing teams (Diamond Snacks and Crystal Biscuits) set up stalls by the tri-lingual stage. Students who had succeeded in the puzzle competition were able to use their tickets at the shop and get a free snack. Which team’s products were more popular?
13th December 2017: Tis the season
Ho Ho Ho! (好, 好, 好) , Merry Christmas! To get into the Christmas spirit, teachers and English Ambassadors donned Santa hats and reindeer antlers to guide students through traditional Christmas Carols. Much mighty musical merry-making resulted in high spirits, which carried through with the next episode of TCN’s got Talent, where new challengers appeared and sweetly serenaded the school.
22nd November 2017: Tongue Terror
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, but could he sing? This English day saw students study some super silly signs and sing songs for stickers. Students were also introduced to the first few songs for the TCN’s got Talent competition. Campus TV secured exclusive footage of our NETs performing for a tough panel of judges. Luckily they made it through to the next round.
18th October 2017: Getting to know you
With so many new students and teachers, how will we ever keep up? With a mystery hunt of course. Today we got to find out about all the English teachers and ask questions about who we are and what we like to do. We finished off with nursery rhyme sing-alongs on the tri-lingual stage.
